We are delighted to present an exciting opportunity to join our Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist Team at The Parapet at King Edward VII Hospital, as a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist, on a fixed term contract to cover maternity leave.

You will be supporting patients under investigation for breast cancer; through diagnosis and treatment; onto the Supported-Self-Management-Pathway. You will take an active role in the multi-disciplinary team, working to support patients in both the out-patient and inpatient settings. You will run nurse led clinics, including prosthesis, as well supporting patients pre and post operatively. You should show a basic understanding of the types of treatments delivered for breast cancer and how to support patients to self-manage and live well with their cancer and treatments.

Applications for this post are invited from nurses who have a passion for delivering excellence in breast cancer care. You will ideally have experience in oncology, SACT or palliative care, or be highly motivated to learn. Previous experience of a nursing post at Band 6 level is preferred, but not essential. We are looking for a dynamic, forward thinking individual who is flexible, self-motivated, reliable and a good team player. You should be educated to degree level. The post holder should be willing to develop their academic and clinical practice and be committed to continuing education.

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder will act as Keyworker for breast cancer patients, providing a link between patients and health care professionals across primary, secondary and tertiary care and act as an advocate for patients / families
  • The post-holder will continually develop, implement and evaluate the Breast Cancer Service to improve and maintain standards of patient care and promote a seamless service within a multi-professional framework
  • The post-holder will be a clinical expert in breast cancer with excellent communication skills. The role requires the ability to work autonomously and independently but within an integrated collaborative team.
  • The post-holder will establish services with the aim of providing support and early referral to associated services for breast cancer patients to include those undergoing cancer treatments

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Degree in Nursing
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable criteria

  • Advanced communication skills
  • Breast / oncology / SACT qualification
  • Counselling / communication qualification, eg Sage and Thyme
  • Prosthesis fitting course
  • Psychology Level 2 training

Skills / Competencies

Essential criteria

  • Enthusiastic, motivated, self-starter
  • Demonstrates strong and empathetic communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently, but equally be a good team collaborator
  • Ability to cope with professional responsibilities, as well as the emotional and psychological pressures of role, with support
  • Good time management and organisational skills

  • Flexible attitude to working, to meet changing demands of the service

Desirable criteria

  • Project management

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Relevant post registration experience at Band 5, or above
  • Multi-professional working
  • Able to demonstrate utilisation of research-based evidence and recent use of audit
  • Experience in patient education / support / counselling skills

Desirable criteria

  • Delivering nurse-led clinics
  • Breast prosthesis fitting
  • Experience of working in oncology, SACT, palliative care
  • Relevant post registration experience at Band 6
